How to Check Your Laptop Specs (Windows & Mac)

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Performance tab. This is the most underrated spec tool on Windows: CPU (model, cores, current speed), Memory (amount, speed, slots used — crucial for upgrade planning), each Disk (and whether it's SSD or HDD), GPU, and Wi-Fi. It shows not just what you have but how hard it's working right now — which is what actually explains a slow laptop.
The deep dive: dxdiag and System Information
Press Win+R, type dxdiag, Enter — the DirectX tool details your graphics chip, driver versions and display modes; the classic view for gaming questions. For everything else there's msinfo32: motherboard, BIOS version, exact model number — the details warranty and driver pages ask for.
Mac: About This Mac
Click the Apple menu → About This Mac. One panel gives you the chip (e.g. an M-series processor), memory, serial number and macOS version; More Info opens the fuller view with storage and displays. Two Mac-specific notes: memory on Apple Silicon is unified and non-upgradeable, so the number you see is permanent; and the chip generation (rather than clock speed) is the main performance signal when comparing machines.

Processor (CPU)
The engine. More cores help with multitasking and heavy work; newer generations matter more than small clock-speed differences. A recent mid-range chip beats an old flagship for most people.
RAM (memory)

Storage (SSD/HDD)
Where everything lives when it's not open. Two numbers matter: size (256GB fills fast; 512GB is comfortable) and type — an SSD versus an old spinning HDD is the biggest single speed difference in modern computing. Graphics (GPU)

Display
Resolution (1920×1080 is the standard baseline), refresh rate (60Hz standard; 120Hz+ feels smoother), and pixel density. Decoding Model Numbers (Enough to Shop Smart)
Manufacturers hide meaningful differences in alphabet soup, but a few patterns go a long way. CPU names encode generation and tier — in general, the first digits after the brand name indicate generation (newer = better efficiency and speed) and the tier (3/5/7/9 across both major PC chip brands) indicates positioning. Suffixes matter too: letters commonly indicate low-power laptop chips versus higher-performance variants.
When comparing laptops, compare like with like: the same tier across different generations can differ enormously, and a lower tier from a newer generation frequently beats a higher tier from years past. When in doubt, search the exact chip name plus "benchmark" and judge from the numbers rather than the branding.
