Microphone Tester

Microphone Tester

Check microphone permission, choose an input device and monitor the live input level in your browser. Use the meter to confirm whether your laptop mic, headset mic or USB microphone is actually sending signal.

Input level: 0%

Understanding microphone level

The level meter shows whether your browser receives an audio signal from the selected microphone. It does not record your voice or send audio to the server.

Good

The result behaves as expected, remains stable, and matches what you are trying to test.

Average

The tool works, but the result suggests a setting, environment or browser limitation may need attention.

Poor

The result is missing, unstable or clearly different from the expected behaviour. Use the fixes below as your next step.

What this test checks

  • Microphone permission for this site and browser session.
  • Input device selection after the browser reveals available microphones.
  • Live signal level based on the microphone waveform measured locally.
  • Whether the selected input is silent, clipping, too quiet or responding normally.

How to understand your results

  • A good result shows the meter rising when you speak and falling when the room is quiet.
  • A low but visible signal usually means the mic works but gain, distance or input selection needs attention.
  • A constantly high meter can indicate background noise, boost settings, a noisy headset cable or the wrong input source.
  • If the meter never moves, check permission, mute switches, OS privacy settings and whether another app has exclusive control.

Common problems and fixes

No input level

Choose another input device, check physical mute switches, and confirm the operating system allows browser microphone access.

Very quiet microphone

Move closer, raise input gain in system settings, and avoid plugging a headset into the wrong combined audio jack.

Distorted or clipping audio

Reduce microphone boost, lower input gain and retest while speaking at a normal volume.

Wrong microphone selected

Laptop arrays, headset mics and monitor mics can all appear. Pick the device closest to your mouth.

FAQ

Is my audio uploaded?

No. The page uses local browser audio analysis to draw the meter and does not upload or save microphone audio.

Why is there a delay before device names appear?

Browsers commonly hide detailed device names until you grant microphone permission.

What level should I aim for?

Normal speech should produce visible movement without staying pinned at the top of the meter.

Browser-based test disclaimer
