Understanding your CPU score

The benchmark runs a fixed workload in web workers: one thread for the single-core phase, then every available thread for the multi-core phase. The total score weights multi-core 60/40 over single-core.

Good

The result behaves as expected, remains stable, and matches what you are trying to test.

Average

The tool works, but the result suggests a setting, environment or browser limitation may need attention.

Poor

The result is missing, unstable or clearly different from the expected behaviour. Use the fixes below as your next step.

What this test checks

  • Single-core throughput - the speed that governs everyday snappiness and many games.
  • Multi-core throughput across all detected threads - what matters for exports, compiling and heavy multitasking.
  • A combined score comparable between machines on the public leaderboard.
  • An optional 60-second stress test that compares early versus late performance to detect thermal throttling.

How to understand your results

  • Browser scores are relative, not equal to native benchmarks - compare TestMyPC scores with other TestMyPC scores.
  • Power mode matters enormously: a laptop on battery can score half its plugged-in result.
  • A large gap between single and multi-core is normal - it reflects core count more than core quality.
  • A stress-test drop over about 15 percent suggests cooling problems: dust, blocked vents or ageing thermal paste.

Common problems and fixes

Score much lower than expected

Plug in, set Windows power mode to Best performance, close other tabs and apps, and re-run. Browsers also throttle background tabs - keep the test visible.

Thread count looks wrong

The browser reports logical threads, which may be limited by the OS or browser privacy settings. It cannot always see through virtualisation.

Big drop in the stress test

Thermal throttling. Clean vents and fans, elevate the laptop rear, and consider a cooling pad - then re-test.

Machine feels slow despite a good score

CPU may not be your bottleneck. Check for an old hard drive with our SSD guide, and test RAM pressure in Task Manager.

FAQ

Is a browser CPU benchmark accurate?

It is consistent and comparable between runs and machines in the same browser, which is what a leaderboard needs. Native tools can access more of the CPU but cannot run instantly from a web page.

Why does my score differ between browsers?

JavaScript engines optimise differently, so compare scores from the same browser family for fairness.

Does the stress test damage my computer?

No. It creates normal full CPU load, the same as exporting a video. Thermal protections in every modern CPU keep temperatures within design limits.

What is a good score?

Above roughly 1600 is strong modern hardware, 900-1600 is mainstream, and below 450 usually means an older or low-power machine.
