Keyboard Tester

Keyboard Tester

Press each key to check whether your browser receives the expected keyboard event. This is useful for finding stuck keys, layout mismatches, intermittent laptop keys and function-key behaviour before you start deeper repair work.

Some function keys may still be controlled by your browser or operating system. If you’d like to test F1-F12 keys, hold FN while pressing the function key.

Visual Keyboard

Click the keyboard area first, then press keys to start capture mode.

Function key capture is ready. Browser or OS-reserved shortcuts may still override web pages.

    What the keyboard result means

The visual keyboard, last key panel and recent history help you separate a physically faulty key from a layout, focus or operating-system shortcut issue.

    Good

The result behaves as expected, remains stable, and matches what you are trying to test.

    Average

The tool works, but the result suggests a setting, environment or browser limitation may need attention.

    Poor

The result is missing, unstable or clearly different from the expected behaviour. Use the fixes below as your next step.

    What this test checks

    • Keydown and keyup events for letters, numbers, modifiers, navigation keys and many function keys.
    • Whether the browser reports a physical key code that matches the selected Windows UK or Mac visual layout.
    • Active modifiers such as Shift, Control, Alt and Command/Meta.
    • Repeated or stuck input patterns that can point to debris, liquid damage or a failing switch.

    How to understand your results

    • A good result is simple: every key you press appears in the status area and releases when you let go.
    • If a key appears in history but not on the visual keyboard, the browser saw the event but the selected layout may not contain that exact code.
    • If several nearby keys fail, suspect a keyboard matrix, ribbon cable or spill-related issue rather than a single keycap.
    • If only shortcuts fail, check app focus, browser extensions and system keyboard settings before assuming the keyboard is broken.

    Common problems and fixes

    Nothing registers

Click inside the keyboard area, try another browser, and disconnect external keyboards that may be confusing the test.

    Function keys open browser controls

Hold Fn or change the system setting that treats F1-F12 as standard function keys.

    One key is intermittent

Clean around the key gently and retest. Intermittent behaviour often becomes worse under light pressure or at certain angles.

    Wrong character appears

Check the operating system keyboard language and compare it with the layout selected on this page.

    FAQ

    Can this test every key?

It can test keys exposed to the browser. Some system, media and security keys may be reserved by the operating system.

Does a missed key mean the keyboard is broken?

Not always. Focus, layout settings, browser shortcuts and external keyboard software can all affect browser input.

Can I use it for a second-hand laptop check?

Yes. Test every letter, number, modifier, arrow and function key, then repeat any doubtful keys several times.
