Typing Speed Test

Typing Speed Test — WPM and Accuracy

Measure your typing speed in words per minute (WPM) with live accuracy tracking. Choose a duration, start typing the words shown, and get a full breakdown of speed, accuracy and consistency. Works with UK and US layouts, external keyboards and laptops.

Understanding your typing result

The test measures net WPM (correct words only), raw WPM (everything you typed) and accuracy. Net WPM at high accuracy is the number that matters for real-world typing.

Good

The result behaves as expected, remains stable, and matches what you are trying to test.

Average

The tool works, but the result suggests a setting, environment or browser limitation may need attention.

Poor

The result is missing, unstable or clearly different from the expected behaviour. Use the fixes below as your next step.

What this test checks

  • Net words per minute calculated from correctly typed words (a word is five characters).
  • Raw WPM from total keystrokes, so you can see the cost of errors.
  • Live accuracy while you type and a final percentage for the whole run.
  • Multiple durations from a 15-second sprint to a 2-minute endurance run.

How to understand your results

  • Around 40 WPM is a typical adult speed; 60+ is fast; 80+ is professional territory.
  • Accuracy below about 92 percent usually means you are typing faster than you can control - slowing down slightly often raises net WPM.
  • Short tests flatter your speed; the 1- and 2-minute runs are closer to sustained real-world typing.
  • Results vary with keyboard quality, layout familiarity and even time of day - compare runs on the same setup.

Common problems and fixes

Words feel wrong for UK typing

The word list is deliberately layout-neutral (no symbols), so UK and US layouts compete fairly. Check your layout separately with the keyboard tester if @ and quotes are swapped.

Keys missing or repeating

If letters drop or repeat during fast typing, run the keyboard tester to check for hardware key faults or run-of-keys failures.

Score much lower than expected

Check for input lag from battery-saver modes, heavy browser tabs or Bluetooth keyboard latency. Wired keyboards test faster.

Cannot type in the box

Click directly inside the input field first. Browser extensions that intercept keystrokes can also block the test.

FAQ

What is a good typing speed?

Around 40 WPM is average, 60-80 WPM is fast, and professional typists often exceed 80 WPM with high accuracy.

What counts as a word?

The standard definition: five characters including spaces. This keeps scores comparable across different word lengths.

Does accuracy affect my WPM?

Yes - net WPM only counts correctly typed words, so errors reduce your score even if you type quickly.

Can I use this on a phone or tablet?

Yes, though on-screen keyboards are much slower than physical ones, so compare like with like.
