The test measures net WPM (correct words only), raw WPM (everything you typed) and accuracy. Net WPM at high accuracy is the number that matters for real-world typing.
The word list is deliberately layout-neutral (no symbols), so UK and US layouts compete fairly. Check your layout separately with the keyboard tester if @ and quotes are swapped.
If letters drop or repeat during fast typing, run the keyboard tester to check for hardware key faults or run-of-keys failures.
Check for input lag from battery-saver modes, heavy browser tabs or Bluetooth keyboard latency. Wired keyboards test faster.
Click directly inside the input field first. Browser extensions that intercept keystrokes can also block the test.
Around 40 WPM is average, 60-80 WPM is fast, and professional typists often exceed 80 WPM with high accuracy.
The standard definition: five characters including spaces. This keeps scores comparable across different word lengths.
Yes - net WPM only counts correctly typed words, so errors reduce your score even if you type quickly.
Yes, though on-screen keyboards are much slower than physical ones, so compare like with like.
TestMyPC results are browser-based and may vary depending on your device, browser, operating system, permissions, drivers, connection, power settings and connected accessories. Use these tools as practical first checks, then confirm important faults with operating-system diagnostics, manufacturer tools or a qualified technician where needed.
