Second Monitor Not Detected? Here's How to Fix It

- Input source — Monitors with multiple inputs (HDMI 1, HDMI 2, DisplayPort) often sit on the wrong one. Use the monitor's own buttons to select the input your cable uses.
- Cable seated at both ends — Unplug and firmly reconnect. HDMI connectors work loose; DisplayPort latches half-engage.
- Try another cable — Cables fail invisibly, and old ones may not support your resolution. This single swap solves a remarkable share of cases.
- Try another port — Different HDMI port on the graphics card, or a different USB-C port on the laptop (not all USB-C ports carry video — check for a DisplayPort or lightning-bolt symbol).
"No signal" on the monitor means the panel is fine and the computer isn't sending video — continue below. A completely dead monitor (no menu, no message) is a monitor problem, not a computer problem.
Windows Fixes, In Order
1. Cycle the projection mode (Win+P)
Press Win+P and choose Extend. If Windows is set to "PC screen only", a perfectly connected second monitor stays deliberately black — the most common software cause of all.
2. Force detection
Settings → System → Display → Multiple displays → Detect. Older monitors especially sometimes need this manual nudge.
3. Restart with the monitor connected
Boot-time detection is more reliable than hot-plug detection. Plug everything in, then restart.
4. Update the graphics driver
Right-click Start → Device Manager → Display adapters → right-click your GPU → Update driver. Better still, get the latest driver directly from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel — Windows Update's versions lag behind. If the problem began right after a driver update, use "Roll back driver" instead.
5. Check refresh rate and resolution
If the monitor is detected but shows a black screen or "input not supported": Settings → System → Display → Advanced display — set a refresh rate the monitor supports, and drop the resolution temporarily to re-establish the handshake.

Not every USB-C port outputs video. The port needs DisplayPort Alt Mode — look for a small display or lightning symbol beside it, or check your laptop's specs. Charging-only ports will never drive a monitor, whatever adapter you use.
Active vs passive adapters matter. Converting between standards (USB-C to HDMI, DisplayPort to HDMI) sometimes needs an active adapter, especially at higher resolutions and refresh rates. A passive adapter that 'should work' but doesn't at 4K is a classic.
Docks have their own firmware and drivers. If monitors connected through a dock vanish after sleep or an update, install the dock manufacturer's latest drivers/firmware — DisplayLink-based docks in particular need their software kept current.
Bandwidth is finite. Two 4K monitors through one cheap dock may exceed what the link can carry. Try one monitor first; if it appears alone but not together, bandwidth is your suspect.
On a Mac?
The same physical checklist applies, then: System Settings → Displays; hold the Option key and the "Detect Displays" button appears. Closing and reopening the lid with the monitor attached often re-triggers detection, as does a restart. Also confirm your Mac supports the number of external displays you're connecting — some base-model Apple Silicon Macs support a limited number natively, which surprises people docking two monitors.
