Why Is My Wi-Fi So Slow? 12 Causes and Fixes

Step One: Find Out What's Actually Slow
"Slow Wi-Fi" bundles two different problems: slow internet arriving at your home, and slow wireless distribution around it. Fixing the wrong one wastes weekends. Ten minutes of structured testing separates them:
- Test at the router — Run the internet speed test with a laptop plugged in by ethernet, or failing that, on Wi-Fi standing next to the router. This is your baseline: the speed genuinely entering your home.
- Compare to your package — Baseline far below what you pay for? The problem is upstream: line, router or provider. Skip to the provider section.
- Test where it feels slow — Same test, sofa/bedroom/office. The gap between here and baseline is what your walls, distance and interference are eating.
- Test at different times — Fine at 10am, dire at 8pm points to congestion (your household's or your provider's).
- Test on a second device — One slow device with everything else fine means the device, not the network: its Wi-Fi drivers, VPN, or background updates.

1. Router in the wrong place
Wi-Fi hates walls, floors, metal, water and distance. A router in a cupboard, behind the TV or on the floor is fighting with a hand tied. Get it central, elevated and in the open — this free fix outperforms most purchased ones.
2. Stuck on the wrong band
2.4 GHz travels further but is slow and congested; 5 GHz (and 6 GHz on newer kit) is much faster at shorter range. If your router broadcasts them as one network name, devices choose — often badly. Splitting the bands into separate names lets you force important devices onto 5 GHz.
3. Channel congestion from the neighbours
In terraces and flats, a dozen networks fight over three usable 2.4 GHz channels. Most routers auto-select channels badly; a manual change (via the router's app or admin page) to a quieter channel can transform evening performance.
4. Too many devices doing too much
Every phone, TV, console and smart bulb shares the same pipe. The heavyweights are cloud backups, game downloads and 4K streams. Router apps increasingly show per-device usage — find the hog before throttling everything.
5. Ageing router hardware
A router from many years ago bottlenecks a modern connection, full stop. If yours predates Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), it can't deliver modern speeds wirelessly; Wi-Fi 6 or newer is worth having on a fast package. Provider-supplied routers improve generation to generation — ask for a current one if yours is old.
6. Background updates and backups
Windows updates, game platform downloads, cloud photo syncs — all default to 'as fast as possible', usually at the worst times. Schedule backups overnight and cap update bandwidth where the option exists.
7. VPN overhead
VPNs cost speed — sometimes a little, sometimes half your bandwidth, depending on server and protocol. Test with it off. If the difference is dramatic, change VPN server or protocol.
8. Interference from other electronics
Microwaves, baby monitors, cordless phones and Bluetooth all pollute 2.4 GHz. If Wi-Fi dies when the microwave runs, you have your answer — move to 5 GHz or move the router.
9. Router needs a restart
Routers run continuously for months and accumulate glitches. Restart monthly (many apps can schedule it). Restarting also lets the router re-pick channels — sometimes fixing #3 by accident.
10. Extender doing more harm than good
Cheap repeaters halve bandwidth by design and create dead zones where devices cling to a weak signal. A mesh system, or a wired access point in the far room, beats a plug-in repeater comprehensively.
11. Old device, old standards
A laptop from a decade ago connects with the standards of its era and slows the network's rhythm for everyone (on older routers). Check whether only ancient devices are slow.
12. Damp, foil and fish tanks
Genuinely: water absorbs 2.4 GHz brilliantly, foil-backed insulation reflects it, and that lovely aquarium between the router and your desk is a signal wall. Line-of-sight matters.
